Greenpower

Electric car racing for schools

Careers

Greenpower is not just about having fun (although this is part of it)! Our aim is also to encourage participants to look at pursuing a career in engineering and technology, realising along the way that it is not a boring subject!

Over the years many students who have taken part in Greenpower events have gone on to study or work in the engineering sector.

Engineering spans a huge range of topics – everything around you has had an engineer involved with it in some way; in its research, design, development and manufacture. The United Kingdom has always been a world leader in many areas of engineering, and will be for many years to come. Choosing a career in this diverse sector is guaranteed to involve you in fascinating and exciting work.

To write about the world of engineering would take up many pages, but if you would like to learn about some of the areas, and how to get started on a career in engineering, take a look at http://www.learninggrid.co.uk/engineering

"I became the Patron of Greenpower in 2004. As someone heavily involved in motorsport I realise how important it is that this country continues to produce engineers of the highest quality. The Greenpower project is a key part of promoting engineering in schools. Combine this with the current relevance of 'green' transport, and it is clear that Greenpower is an initiative that really works. I look forward to playing a part in its future success."
The Earl of March, Patron of Greenpower

Work Experience

If you are unsure whether engineering is right for you, there are opportunities available to sample it, from work experience whilst still at school, to a Year in Industry before university. Visit www.yini.org.uk to learn more about this.

We can also sometimes offer work experience to interested students, at our office/workshop here in Littlehampton. Contact jeremy@greenpower.co.uk if you might be interested in joining us for work experience.

The Greenpower Experience

So, we hope that some of you reading this may consider joining the exciting world of engineering... Others of you may not desire this at all, and take part in Greenpower purely because it is fun! Whichever of these you are, thank you for taking part, and we look forward to seeing you again soon…

If you would like to share any of your Greenpower experiences with us, then please e-mail them to marketing@greenpower.co.uk to join the quotes below:

"I love the idea of being able to design, build and drive a motor vehicle at my age so hopefully in the future I can use the knowledge I have got from this and put it into action to be in a real motor racing team when I am older."
Joseph Hoare 'Titch', Chatham House Grammar School

"The idea of being able to design, build and campaign an electric race car was unlike any other school competition. I enjoyed the real engineering that went into producing the car. Watching something that you helped build, race around for six hours is fun in itself. Greenpower helped me to realise that I wanted a career in Engineering. I am now studying engineering at Plymouth University"
Oli Egan, Ex 'Aluuuuuminium' Team

"Greenpower helps put the Engineering back into Technology Education"
Gareth Evans, Teacher, Trinity School

"I not only had the enjoyment of entering the Greenpower competition but all this went towards me receiving an A* grade for my GCSE. I have always been interested in motorsport and as a result of my involvement in Greenpower I now want to take up a career in automotive engineering, and plan to go to University to gain a degree in Automotive Engineering when I finish my A-levels."
Clare Cletheroe, The Renegades

"Ever since I started a team to take part in the Greenpower races, I've realised it's not the winning that counts, but definitely the taking part and the great experiences you have. The amount of skills and technical experience you gain through taking part in Greenpower events are incalculable, not to mention the life skills you gain which will help in many ways in the future."
Emily Wakeford, Sandbach High School

"Greenpower has certainly made me want to enter engineering as a career."
Alex Hunter, Chipping Sodbury School
