Foil backed foam
  • RobRob February 2011
    Hi all
We've recently respomded to a freecycle post for some foam - we've now got about a 6ft x 6ft x 4ft pile of it, all old and both sides backed with foil. It all came out of a loft, so we were just wondering - how do we join all the sheets together??

Apart from that, want any? whipser me if you do, it's free :)

Rob, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you intend to use it for body shell or mould making I think it may be the wrong type. We joined ours with araldite but it was not the foil backed type.
    Regards
    Martin
  • Foil backed foam is usually polyurethane which is perfectly suitable for making moulds but can't be hot wire cut and the dust from sanding is very unpleasant. On the other hand it's probably easier to sand to shape than polystyrene. Stick together with aerosol cans of expanding foam.

I am planning to use the same stuff, very difficult to get without foil backing. I think foil does peel off probably easier when new though. Hate the expanding foam in cans idea as that stuff always seems to go everywhere but I'm sure it will work.
I intend to make the body of the car from this and cover it with glassfibre mat and coat with epoxy maybe polyester depends on budget.
