Info wanted about THE motor
  • SWCC November 2011
Hi, we are kind of new around here and will be asking some stupid and hopefully not so stupid questions....

So in with the first one....

Exactly which model of motor is it? Or is it a Fracmo custom build?
How is it configured inside??? Are there stator coils? Is only one armature coil active at any one time? Are there any cunning series wound coils inside??

or is it a bog standard DC motor?

    Cheers
  • Welcome to Greenpower !
It is a Fracmo permanent magnet DC motor. Not sure if it is custom or a standard model. I think it was/is used as a wheelchair motor. There are 4 (?) permanent magnets around the outside glued to the casing. The armature is wound and connected to a commutator. There are 4 brushes and two wires (-ve and +ve) for input power. There is a 1uF capacitor across the input wires for RF interference and another from +ve to the casing all within the unit.
So, yes, it is a bog standard 24V DC motor with about 70% efficiency.
There are performance graphs at: http://www.greenpower.beamweb.co.uk/files/TechnicalInfo/GreenpowerF24PerformanceGraph.pdf
This should also be on the Greenpower website somewhere but I'm not sure where together with a document describing what the graphs show.

    Have Fun.

The motor , as far as I can see, is uniquely for Greenpower, as you cannot order anything that seems close enough to it from the Fracmo website. http://www.fracmo.com/
The motor WANTS to run at 2000rpm, and the current draw is rapidly increased with loading, as it tries to return to this speed. On the car, it should draw 17.5-18 amps to last the race (in F24) without reaching crawling (the car doing about 5mph, not sounding all that happy).
Our present gearing is about 5:1 - wheel slower than motor, and we can do the distance competitively. (Barring a dud charger, as happened at the final)
To find out anything Terry and I may have missed, search the forum for previous discussions.

    Thanks very much guys.
We raced at Bedford and Dunsfold a few years ago with a 'borrowed' secondhand car from the early days of Greenpower. But are aiming to be far more involved this year with a new car that we have entered in both F24 and F24+ (although I'm not too sure about the + just yet)
