Has anyone attached any plastic or wooden wheel covers. We were looking to make a set and paint over them. Any information would be greatfully accepted. Thanks, The Cults Academy team.
We use a product in Australia called PETG. Same stuff as plastic drink bottles but in a sheet. Easy to cut and hold it on with cable ties and tape. This stuff is very tough and can take a big hit without shattering, which is important as we use it on the inside as well as the outside of the wheel. Last thing you want is bits of sharp plastic spinning at high speed near the drivers.
You could try polypropylene sheet which is commonly supplied by D&T suppliers. Sheets are supplied in various colours, opaque or transluscent size 650mmx1100mm either 0.5mm or 0.9mm thick.
We used 1mm plywood for RR8. We cut out a circle with a circular hole in the middle (used some maths to work out the diameter as the final shape is a cone). Then we cut a thin triangle out from outside to inside (some more maths) and glued this together with a strip of backing plywood. This gives a cone shape. We simply then glued this to the rim using Evo-Stik Serious Stuff Adhesive (with a bit of sanding of the rim first) and painted.
Solarfilm is easier to work with but VERY flimsy, Solartex is not so easy but still flimsy. We suffer tears around the pump hole and cutout for the hub. We also found it a lot more difficult getting the tyres on with the film enlarging the rim diameter (see other posts about 349mm rims)
Our wheels fit in the vacuum former so we are going to investigate heating and draping a thin clear plastic (I think it's ABS but it's whatever the school has a 50m roll of) over the wheels. I doubt we'll have to use the vacuum pump to help though. Saves all the thought (and a seam) of making cones.
