80 Tooth chain ring
  • nigelpcat January 26
Hi. Before I go and order an expensiive carbon fibre 80T chain ring for standard bike chain has anybody got an aluminium one out there and where did you find it. Failing that would anybody care to let me have a dxf file and I'll see if I can get one cut locally. My google searches result in a maker who doesn't any more, really expensive ones from Australia and German ones but only up to 75 teeth. Really need 80 so gearing is about right wioth 16 , 17 or 18 on the motor. I really am hoping to get one for less than £50.
Have some spare wheels 20" on Halo hubs to trade.

Ashley - I have a 80tooth chainring on 130PCD spider dxf if you want it. email me on bob dot carter at virgin dot net
it's for 1/2 inch bike chain - get it laser cut in whatever thickness suits your chain - in steel it should be less than £20.
If you want a different middle (e.g. bolt to disc mountings, bolt to a normal 16 tooth freewheel or sit on a geared hub input I can do you that too ;^)

Bob I have emailed you, let me know if you didn't get it. I have just re-read your message as it was very early in the moring when I saw it. I would love the dxf file and am looking for a maker.

just thought I'd try to embed a picture - this is a typical laser cut sprocket mounted on a freewheel (LH thread in this case)

We have had our few sprockets made locally from DXF files. I generated the sprocket profile with a pretty cheap piece of software called Gear Generator, which outputs as a DXF, but only the profile and center hole, I then imported this into 2D Design Tools, to add spoke cut outs and mounting holes. Re- exporting as a DXF for production.

  • Now have the sprocket many thanks to Bob. Fantastic job just what we wanted, we will see if it works this year then consider replacing with a carbon fibre one, always wanted to play with carbon fibre. Must admit it's bigger than we expected , should really have known this but have been used to 8mm pitch chain not 1/2". If it gets knocked or damaged may have trouble that's where a carbon one would win but the quote for carbon was £119 (fibrelyte) hence thinking about laying up a sheet of fibre with epoxy on a glass plate along with a vacuum bag, but all that's next year need to get this car finished first.
