Children at a number of primary schools across East Sussex will be getting their first experience of driving when they race electric cars they have built from a kit at Plumpton College.
The event is being supported by Newcastle University, Cleveland Scientific Institution Sevcon and MCIS .
Event sponsor Passivent support a school entry as well.
There was a great show from Sussex schools at the first regional heat of the Greenpower 2011 challenge. Seaford College’s Diablo team finished in 7th place and also won the Best Engineered Car award on the day out of a field of 46 teams which was a tremendous effort in difficult wet and windy conditions.
Furze Platt Senior in Maidenhead will be looking to build on their success at Silverstone last month when the Greenpower electric car challenge returns to Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday 12 June.
Local schools will be racing against leaders from the engineering industry at Silverstone on Sunday 1st May.
The schools have already proved themselves in the 2010 Greenpower Championship. Now companies including Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover and Siemens are tasked with building an electric car to the Greenpower specifications capable of racing in a four hour endurance race.
Bentley have taken up the challenge to get involved in the largest electric car racing series in the UK. The apprentices at Bentley Motors were eager to build a car to the Greenpower specification using just the 24 volt electric motor and batteries supplied to them.
The Mountbatten Centre will once again be turned into a racing circuit when they accommodate primary schools from across Portsmouth and Havant at the Lockheed Martin Portsmouth Goblin challenge.
Local Kent schools, St Nicholas at Wade and St Peters in Thanet near Ramsgate both received late Christmas presents in January when the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) South Eastern Region gave them each an electric kit car.
Local East Sussex schools, Newick CofE Primary School and Laughton Community Primary School near Lewes both received early Christmas presents in December when the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Southern Region gave them each an electric kit car.
