Greenpower: Delivering High-Impact ROI in STEM Education

6 May 2026

Greenpower Education Trust is a highly effective and scalable STEM education programme that delivers substantial social and economic value. Independent evaluation from the Siemens Curiosity Project shows that Greenpower generates up to £17 of social value for every £1 invested, making it a highly effective investment in education and skills development. By engaging young people in designing, building, and racing electric cars, the programme increases participation in STEM subjects and supports progression into engineering careers. Supported by industry partners and strong funding, Greenpower is a proven, scalable investment.

The UK faces a continuing shortage of engineering talent, with an estimated gap of 30,000 graduates each year (Siemens report). Addressing this challenge requires early and sustained engagement in STEM. Greenpower meets this need through a hands-on model that brings engineering to life, helping students to develop practical skills, confidence, and an interest in technical careers.

Evidence of Impact

Greenpower’s impact has been independently assessed using HM Treasury Green Book methodology. The findings show a lifetime return of £17.07 for every £1 invested in Greenpower, with net social benefits exceeding £2.2 million from a single cohort year.

These results are based on conservative assumptions and do not capture all wider benefits, meaning the true impact is likely higher.

Educational and Career Outcomes

Greenpower has a clear influence on students’ choices and aspirations. Between 71% and 91% of participants report increased likelihood of taking STEM subjects, while up to 100% report increased confidence in pursuing engineering careers.

These changes lead to long-term benefits, including higher education attainment and improved career prospects. Engineering careers themselves offer around a 22% salary premium compared to the average graduate, reinforcing the economic value of these pathways.

Wider Value

Beyond measurable outcomes, Greenpower supports the development of the future workplace, particularly in areas linked to engineering and motorsport. It also helps widen participation in STEM by engaging students from diverse backgrounds and making engineering accessible and relevant.

The charity’s longstanding partnership with Ford further demonstrates its value to industry, reflecting over two decades of sustained collaboration and confidence.

Funding and Growth

Greenpower continues to attract strong financial support. In March 2026, the organisation secured £12,300 in grant funding, with £275,955 in secured and prospective funding. This includes support from trusts, foundations, and corporate partners, indicating strong demand and confidence in the programme.

This funding is directly invested in enabling more young people to take part, particularly in underserved communities. It supports the delivery of hands-on STEM experiences, regional and national events, and the resources and guidance needed for teams to succeed. These investments help inspire long-term engagement with STEM.

Greenpower is well positioned to grow its impact at a time when demand for STEM skills is increasing. Its established model, strong partnerships, and growing funding base provide a solid foundation for expansion.

Further investment will allow the organisation to reach more young people and extend its work into new areas and communities. In doing so, Greenpower can continue to play a meaningful role in shaping a skilled and future-ready workforce.
