20thAnniversary

Greenpower will be celebrating its 20th anniversary throughout 2019. It has come a very long way from a single race held at Goodwood in 1999, to an international scheme with teams from 5 different continents, and licences operating across the globe. Races have been held at many different locations across the country, including the prestigious Silverstone.

The season so far…

The 2019 season started in the rain, with the Goodwood Test Event. 44 cars made their way around the Goodwood Motor Circuit, with FireBird from Team Bird GP taking 1st place by only 20 seconds.

The Goblin season also started with heavy showers throughout the day at the HMS Excellent naval base in Portsmouth, Newick CoE braving the weather to take the win by a massive 12 points. Two weeks later at Plumpton College, with the temperature considerably warmer, 18 cars raced on the familiar track. After the exhilarating sprint race, Thrasher from Penthorpe school won by only 1 point from Newick CoE. Three days later, 8 cars returned to Ford Airfield for the second year, Newick CoE winning once again.

Meanwhile, at the first of two East Fortune Heats, GTM Spyder from Grampion Transport Museum won, covering a distance of 29.02 miles.

Hull Street Race

To commemorate the 20th anniversary, a one-off street race is being held in Hull city centre. Teams from the local area have been invited to come and compete in this special event, with F24, F24+ and Goblin cars attending. F24 cars will be racing around the street circuit in a practice session and two races, each an hour and a half; while F24+ cars have an hour long race in the middle of the day. Goblin teams will be racing in the usual drag and slalom events, before one lucky driver from each team having the opportunity to drive one lap around the main street circuit in the lap of Champions.

As well as the racing, an exhibition is going to be held in the neighbouring Queen’s Gardens, containing many photos and stories from all of 20 years of Greenpower’s operation. Some teams will also be present to explain how they have got ready for the street race and to give their view on Greenpower as a whole.

All drivers have attended a test event at Blyton Park at the beginning of March, to ensure that they are capable of driving on the street track.

Golden Chassis

Greenpower supplies teams in its three categories with kit-cars. At the beginning of 2019, the 1000th kit-car was produced – Greenpower has kept this special gold chassis and it is soon to set out on a tour of the UK, taking in sights across the country from Cornwall to Scotland, including Stonehenge and the Angel of the North. It will also be attending many events across the country, the Hull Street Race being one of them.

Gathering of Goblins

The amazing Gathering of Goblins event will this year be returning to its home at the Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday 21st July. This international event brings together over 90 cars from across the UK and around the world for a brilliant day of racing at this historic circuit and is an opportunity for the children who have been involved in the design and building of their Goblin Kit Cars to proudly display their achievements.

The Gathering gives drivers the chance to drive in the familiar Drag and Slalom events, but also a timed sprint race around the chicane. In the afternoon, the lap of champions will be driven by one child from each team around the 2.4 mile circuit.

Goodwood Heat

Also to be held at the iconic Goodwood Motor Circuit is our annual Goodwood Heat on Sunday 30th June. Normally a swelteringly hot day, full of exciting racing, and a chance for the students to show off all of their hard work that they have put into building and perfecting their cars.

Silverstone

The 2019 Greenpower International Finals will be held exactly 20 years on from when it all started on the 17th October 1999. With only the top teams being accepted into this event, expect very fast racing from both F24 and F24+ teams. To add to the excitement, this milestone event will be held at the spiritual home of British motorsport, Silverstone.
